Stanley Cup Playoffs: Canes, Leafs, Blues, Kings Take Series Openers On Opening Night
The National Hockey League's Stanley Cup Playoffs opened on Monday with the opening game of each of four first-round series.
All series throughout the playoffs are best-of-seven.
EASTERN CONFERENCE:
At Raleigh, North Carolina:
Seth Jarvis and Nino Niederreirer each scored a goal two minutes and ten seconds apart in the second period while Antti Raanta saved 35 of 36 shots as the Carolina Hurricanes overpowered the visiting Boston Bruins 5-1 in the opening contest of their conference quarterfinal series.
At Toronto:
Auston Matthews scored twice and assisted once while Jack Campbell stopped all 24 shots as the Toronto Maple Leafs blanked the visiting two-time Stanley Cup champions Tampa Bay Lightning 5-0 in their series opener.
WESTERN CONFERENCE:
At Saint Paul, Minnesota:
David Perron posted a hat trick and an assist while Ville Husto saved all 37 shots as the St. Louis Blues opened their series with the Minnesota Wild by dominating the hosts 4-0.
At Edmonton, Alberta:
Phillip Danault scored the game winner late in the third period as the Los Angeles Kings won a playoff game for the first time since 2016 by holding off the Edmonton Oilers 4-3 on the road.
NBA Playoffs: Heat, Suns Take Series Openers
The NBA Playoffs continued on Tuesday with two games.
EASTERN CONFERENCE:
At Miami:
Tyler Herro scored 25 points off the bench while Bam Adebayo added 24 (to go with his 12 rebounds) as the Miami Heat dominated the Joel Embiid-less Philadelphia 76ers 106-92 at home in the opening game of their conference semifinal series.
Tobias Harris topped the Sixers with 27 points.
WESTERN CONFERENCE:
At Phoenix, Arizona:
Deandre Ayton scored 25 points (and grabbed eight rebounds) while Devin Booker added 23 (plus nine rebounds and eight assists) as the Phoenix Suns outlasted the visiting Dallas Mavericks 121-114 in their series opener.
Luka Doncic topped the Mavericks with 45 points to go with his 12 boards and eight assists.
