NCAA Tourney:  Hogs Knock Out Zags; Duke, Houston, Villanova Also Advance To Elite Eight


The NCAA's Sweet Sixteen opened on Thursday with four games.


In West Regional action at San Francisco, J.D. Notae scored 21 points to help guide fourth-seeded Arkansas (28-8) to a 74-68 upset victory over overall top-seeded Gonzaga (28-4).


Drew Timme led the Bulldogs with 25 points.


In the nightcap, Paolo Banchero scored 22 points as the second-seeded Duke Blue Devils (31-6), with all five starters scoring in double figures, held off the third-seeded Texas Tech Red Raiders (27-10) 78-73.


Bryson Williams scored 21 points to pace Tech.


Meanwhile, in South Region action in San Antonio, Jermaine Samuels scored 22 points to power the third-seeded Villanova Wildcats (29-7) past the eleventh-seeded Michigan Wolverines (19-15) 63-55.


In the nightcap, Jamal Shead scored 21 points as the fifth-seeded Houston Cougars (32-5) knocked off the top-seeded Arizona Wildcats (33-4) 72-60.




World Cup Qualifying:  Team USA Gains Scoreless Draw With El Tri In Mexico City


In Thursday action from CONCACAF-regional qualifying for this year's FIFA World Cup, the United States and Mexico each picked up a point after a 0-0 draw in Mexico City; Costa Rica, with Celso Borges scored the game's lone goal as they knocked off visiting Canada 1-0, preventing the guests from locking up their first Word Cup berth since 1986.  


A pair of games ended in 1-1 draws---El Salvador's game at Jamaica which knocked the guests out of contention and Panama's home match with already-already eliminated Honduras.
