NBA Playoffs: Pacers Oust Hornets, Get Wizards For Shot At 76ers; Celtics Dump Washington, Get Nets Next; Charlotte Eliminated

The preliminary round of the National Basketball Association Playoffs opened with two Tuesday games, both in the Eastern Conference.

At Indianapolis:

Oshae Brissett scored 23 points while Doug McDermott added 21 as the Indiana Pacers, with eight players (including all five starters) scoring in double digits, stepped on the Charlotte Hornets 144-117 at home.

Miles Bridges paced the Hornets with 23 points while grabbing eight rebounds.

With the defeat, the Hornets were eliminated from the playoffs; meanwhile, the Pacers would face the Washington-Boston loser in a one-game playoff for the right to take on the Philadelphia 76ers----the East's top seed----in the conference quarterfinals.

At Boston:

Jayson Tatum scored 50 points and pulled down eight rebounds as the Boston Celtics advanced to the Eastern Conference quarterfinals after their 118-100 home victory over the Washington Wizards.

Kemba Walkers added 29 points to the Celtics' coffers.

Bradley Beal, who grabbed nine rebounds, and Russell Westbrook, who pulled in 14 boards, top the Wizards with 23 and 20 points, respectively.

The Celtics will get the second-seeded Brooklyn Nets in the conference quarterfinals while the Wizards will take on Indiana in a one-game playoff to be the top-seeded Philadelphia 76ers' conference quarterfinal opponent.
