FIFA World Cup: Croatia Knocks Out Brazil In PK Shootout; Argentina Likewise Against The Netherlands

 The quarterfinal round of the FIFA World Cup opened on Friday in Qatar.


At Education City Stadium, Al Rayyan:


After 90 minutes of scoreless regulation, Neymar in the first minute of the stoppage-time portion of the first overtime period (105'+1) scored for Brazil, then Bruno Petkovic in the second overtime period (117') equalized for Croatia.


Then, in the penalty-kick shootout, Nikola Vlasic, Jovro Majer, Luka Modric, and Mislav Orsic converted their spot kicks and the Croatians defeated the Brazilians 4-2 to advanced to the semifinal round.


At Lusail Iconic Stadium, Lusail:


After Wout Weghorst scored twice (83', 90'+11) to tie the game for the Netherlands (Nahuel Molina in the 35th minute and Lionel Messi converted a penalty kick in the 73rd minute for Argentina) to force two scoreless 15-minute period overtimes, Lionel Messi, Leandro Paredes, Gonzalo Montiel, and Lautaro Martinez converted their spot kicks as the White and Blue Sky won the penalty-kick shootout against the Netherlands 4-3.
