FIFA World Cup: Socceroos Join France In Advancing To Knockout Stage; Argentina and Poland Also Advance

 Four games were played in Qatar as FIFA World Cup group-stage play continued.


GROUP C:


At Stadium 974, Doha:


Alexis Mac Allister (46') and Julian Alvarez (67') each scored once as Argentina blanked Poland 2-0 as both squads advanced to the knockout stage.


At Lusail Iconic Stadium, Lusail:


Henry Martin (47') and Luis Chavez (52') each scored once as Mexico defeated Saudi Arabia 2-1.  The Saudis' Salem Al-Dawsari's stoppage-time goal (90'+5) ended Mexico's tournament, however.


Final Group C Standings:


1. Argentina (GP: 3; GD: +3; PTS: 6)

2. Poland (GP: 3; GD: 0; PTS: 4)

3. Mexico (GP: 3; GD: -1; PTS: 4)

4. Saudi Arabia (GP: 3; GD: -2; PTS: 3)


Argentina and Poland advanced to the knockout stage.




GROUP D:


At Al Janoub Stadium, Al Wakrah:


Mathew Leckie scored the only goal of the match in the 60th minute as Australia defeated Denmark 1-0 to advance to the Round of 16.


At Education City Stadium, Al Rayyan:


Wahbi Khazri scored the game's lone goal in the 58th minute as Tunisia defeated France 1-0.  The French had already clinched a berth in the knockout stage while the Tunisians were still eliminated.


Final Group D Standings:


1. France (GP: 3; GD: +3; PTS: 6)

2. Australia (GP: 3; GD: -1; PTS: 6)

3. Tunisia (GP: 3; GD: 0; PTS: 4)

4. Denmark (GP: 3; GD: -2; PTS: 1)


France and Australia advanced to the knockout stage.
