Both contests in the semifinal round of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup were played on Wednesday.
At Exploria Stadium, Orlando, Florida:
Cesar Araujo scored twice (45'+4. 62') as Orlando City defeated the visiting New York Red Bulls 5-1.
At Heart Health Park, Sacramento, California:
After a 0-0 regulation stalemate----and with overtime dispensed with----Damia Viader, Luis Felipe Fernandes, Luther Archimede, Maalique Foster, and Rodrigo Lopez converted their spot kicks as the homestanding Sacramento Republic, from the second-division USL Championship, won the penalty-kick shootout, 5-4 at Sporting Kansas City's expense.
The Republic thus became the first lower-division club to reach the Open Cup final since 2008 when the Charleston Battery made it (only to lose to the Seattle Sounders).
They'll look to be the first non-MLS club to win it since the Rochester Raging Rhino knocked off the Colorado Rapids in 1999 as they take on Orlando City on the road on September 7 with the winner qualifying for next year's CONCACAF Champions League.
