At Providence Park, Portland, Oregon:
After a 1-1 regulation draw that was followed by two scoreless fifteen-minute overtime periods, Sean Johnson, named the game's Most Valuable Player, after making four saves in 120 minutes of open play, saved two spot kicks while Valentin Castellanos (who scored in the 41st minute of regulation), Maxi Morales, Talles Mango, and Alexander Callens converted theirs as New York City defeated the home-standing Portland Timbers 4-2 in the penalty-kick shootout on Saturday and the first MLS Cup championship in their seven-year history.
The CityZens will play in next year's CONCACAF Champions League.
Felipe Mora forced overtime with his stoppage-time (90'+4) equalizer for the Timbers; however, the aforementioned Mr. Johnson saved his spot kick (as well as Diego Valeri's in what might have been The Maestro's final game in a Portland jersey) in the shootout while Santiago Moreno and Cristhian Paredes converted theirs.
It was still a great season for the men from the Rose City.
