Timbers Smother Sounders In Seattle


At Lumen Field, Seattle, Washington:


Jaroslaw Niezgoda (23'), Santiago Moreno (PK-82'), and Dairon Asprilla (85') each scored once on Saturday as the Portland Timbers stretched their Major League Soccer unbeaten run to five games by smothering the homestanding Seattle Sounders 3-0 in a Cascadia Cup clash, the 115th encounter between the two clubs, dating back to the NASL  days of 1975.


Goalkeeper Aljaz Ivacic made five saves to preserve the shutout.

Pitcher Carlos Rodon pitched three-hit, 12-strikeout complete game while Wilmer Flores smacked a two-run eighth-inning homer on Saturday as the San Francisco Giants (42-41) upended the homestanding San Diego Padres (49-37) 3-1.
